Technology and the Making of the Netherlands

De auteurs van Technology and the Making of the Netherlands 'The Age of Contested Modernization, 1870-1970', laten zien hoe de Nederlandse geschiedenis mede is gevormd door de wisselwerking tussen technische en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen. Aan bod komt een breed scala aan historische veranderingsprocessen, waaronder de opkomst van de consumptiemaatschappij, de ontwikkeling van de kennissamenleving, de veranderende rol van ingenieurs, het ontstaan van allerlei netwerken en infrastructuren en de invloed van de koloniën. Het boek is een bewerkte Engelse vertaling van het synthetiserende zevende en laatste deel van de serie Techniek in Nederland in de twintigste eeuw. Deze vertaling is mede mogelijk gemaakt door NWO en is tot stand gekomen onder auspiciën van de Stichting Historie der Techniek.

Een auteursteam afkomstig uit uiteenlopende disciplines beschrijft de rol die techniek heeft gespeeld in de ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse samenleving. In de twintigste eeuw golden techniek en modernisering als een bijna onscheidbare twee-eenheid. Het boek toont aan dat dit lang niet altijd onbetwist of vanzelfsprekend was. Modernisering leidde weliswaar tot vooruitgang en economische groei, maar resulteerde tegelijkertijd in ongewenste gevolgen voor milieu, leef- en werkomgeving.

Naast schaalvergroting is de vorming van netwerken kenmerkend voor de twintigste eeuw. Denk aan de materiële eenwording van Nederland via transportwegen en netwerken voor energie en communicatie. Nieuwe technieken zoals elektriciteit, de verbrandingsmotor, synthetische chemie en allerlei communicatietechnieken zoals de telefoon en de radio fungeerden als aanjagers van het moderniseringsproces. De auteurs laten zien dat de eigenlijke innovaties vaak tot stand kwamen op locaties waar allerlei technieken samenkomen. Het gaat dan om de stad, het kantoor, het huishouden, de Rotterdamse haven of Schiphol. Voor Nederland bleek ook de relatie met de overzeese gebiedsdelen belangrijk.

De uitgave maakt de resultaten van het baanbrekende techniekhistorisch onderzoek, zoals dat sinds het midden van de jaren negentig is uitgevoerd, toegankelijk voor een internationaal publiek. In Nederland verzorgt uitgeverij Walburg Pers de uitgave. Buiten Nederland treedt het gerenommeerde The MIT-Press op als uitgever.

This study offers both an account of  twentieth-century technology in the Netherlands and a view of Dutch history  through the lens of technology. It describes the trajectory of modernization  through technology in certain characteristically Dutch contexts, including the  omnipresence of water, the pervasiveness of urbanization coupled with a  high-tech agricultural sector, and the legacy of colonialism, but at the same  time makes it clear that Dutch struggles over technology choices, infrastructure  development, mass production, and the role of government are comparable to the  experience of any Western industrialized country.

The book, which  synthesizes findings originally presented in a series of seven volumes published  in the Netherlands, uses the idea of contested modernization as an overarching  concept through which to understand Dutch technological history. The modernizers  of Dutch society—including engineers, management consultants, architects, and  others did not always agree on how to modernize; moreover, the unruliness of  specific practices often derailed or redirected implementation. Tensions between  top-down and bottom-up modernization, and between scale-enlargement and more  flexible arrangements of mutual coordination and cooperation shaped Dutch  history.

The chapters examine such topics as attempts to create an industrial  nation, materially connected through infrastructure; the conflicts that came  with the arrival of mass production and the emergence of a consumer society; and  land-use planning in a low-lying country.
